Harris Tweed: A cloth of heritage and history

February 1, 2017

A Harris History Lesson

Harris tweed is an intricate hand woven woollen cloth from the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The tweed has been made for centuries by the islanders of Lewis and Harris, originally for protection from the icy winds of northern Scotland.

By the 18th century the weaving of the tweed had become a staple industry for the islands, as the tweed became a popular choice of fabric among the aristocracy of the time, including members of Queen Victoria’s inner circle.

The trade boomed and in 1966 7.6 million yard of Harris Tweed was produced!

Why we love it

It's simple, Harris Tweed is timeless. The clothes are not designed for one season or one trend, but to stand the test of time. With each thread containing a myriad of different colours, Harris Tweed is a cloth of great depth and complexity. The quality is unrivalled and you can be sure that when you buy the tweed you are investing in a life long thing, a British classic.

View our range.

We are pleased to say that the Earland Brothers Harris Tweed range will be extended for Autumn Winter 17. Having visited our suppliers this week we have been offered new cloths that we will be be making in our current range of hats, plus some new shapes – these will be available from July 2017. We hope that you will like them, as we think that it is always good to freshen up a successful range of products by introducing new cloths.

Best wishes,

Andrew and Richard
